A real brain pleaser!

I like this book a lot better than Holly's first book (More Than A Minute), which tried to cram everything there is to know about management into a few hundred pages. Using Your Brain is shorter, more to the point, and a lot more fun to read. More important, it's easier to put the ideas into action, which is one of my top criteria for a successful business book.

I especially like the "Playing With Your Brain" exercises, which provide direction for using the ideas in your business. These days, everyone has access to the same information and technology, and learning to use the brain more effectively is one of the last frontiers of management/leadership. Using Your Brain offers a lot of good ideas for assessing how we think, process information, and make decisions. It opened my eyes to how and why I sometimes get stuck in doing the same things over and over, and what to do about it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to use their two lbs. of gray matter more effectively - in business and in life.

About the Author

Roger LeRoy Miller is currently affiliated with the University of Texas — Arlington. Prior to this affiliation, he has held faculty appointments at the University of Washington at Seattle, the University of Hawaii, Clemson University, and the University of Miami, where he co-founded the Law and Economics Center. ���

Miller has authored and co-authored a myriad of articles and textbooks. He is the sole author of the best-selling Economics Today text and a co-author of the highly successful Economics of Public Issues. In addition to his work in academia, Miller has been invited to give talks and lectures across America, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and France. Biased book

I didn't care much for the author of this book. Even from reading the first chapter, he seems like an opinionated jerk. The section titled "A Warning: Recognize Normative Analysis" sounds like something the editor had to put in there because of how the author wrote the book. For example, he writes, "Do not get the impression that a textbook author will be able to keep all personal values out of the book. They will slip through" (11). It seems like every opinion the author had succeeded in making it into the book.

I know it is hard to remain completely non-biased in a book on economics. Indeed, it's quite likely the author will favor one side or the other when discussing such topics as corporate income tax, Medicare, and other topics. However, the mark of a good author is the ability to suppress those opinions and present each side equally. However, in this book, his side is presented and then he puts down the other side. For example, in the section about free trade, he lists the arguments against free trade, one of which is protecting domestic jobs. The author spends the entire section stating why he feels allowing companies to outsource their jobs to other countries (like China or India) does not affect domestic (e.g., American) jobs at all. And he brings politics into it. For example, on why this is the biggest argument against free trade, he states, "This is a compelling argument, particularly for politicians from areas that may be threatened by foreign competition" (714). This line is completely unnecessary. The entire section labeled Protecting Domestic Jobs is nothing but his explaining why this is apparently not a factor in American unemployment, instead of addressing both sides. This isn't the only example -- I'd find more, but I don't enjoy going back through this book.

I will at least afford it two stars because some of the information was useful and not biased. For example, it's hard to bias supply and demand. Basically, the parts which are strictly instruction are good. But the author injects his opinion far too often into this book.

Just pure garbage

The author concentrated on fattening this book with too much useless sentences rather than solid concrete material that will stick to a student's memory. The book is big and wordy. It takes a lot of time to read and understand what the author is trying to conclude. Book is more focused around QUANTITY THAN QUALITY. I have dealt with publications by Pearson, and came to the decisive conclusion that most of their materials are garbage. I really hope schools should heed to this and banned Pearson from their campus.

Real World Economics

This book is a MUST KEEP, it can be referenced for other MBA classes. This book is well written, explains 99% of concepts to the average person. I have used this book in several of my other MBA program courses. It is a book that should be saved, not re-sold to the campus book stores, you will see its value later on when you need it again.

The cryosphere is an essential member of the globe’s environmental systems, with a unique sensitivity to climate change at all spatial and temporal scales. This is the first textbook to consider all aspects of the cryosphere system (ice sheets, sea ice, snow, river and lake ice, glaciers, and permafrost) in the context of global environmental change driven by human activity and climate. Professor Slaymaker's research has four foci: mountain hydrogeomorphology, land use impacts, sustainable development and global environmental change. From 1994-2002 he was a Governor of the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa.

Professor Kelly's research focuses on the use of measurements from remote sensing ground, aircraft and satellite instruments coupled with environmental models to better understand the cryosphere, especially snow and ice environments. He is also interested in the development of new technologies for improved direct in situ and remote sensing measurements of the cryosphere.

A lovely book, with gorgeous illustrations!

This is a fascinating book, and a historical set piece. It is the story of Christopher Columbus from a very well-meaning author, who focused on lovely illustrations at the price of historical accuracy. Christopher is portrayed as a happy lad, begging to do the right thing. Everything goes well: "The Nina bounced from wave to wave. Spain at last!" or "Next came the Indians all smeared with paint..... the people were quite afraid." I would buy it as a curiosity - The illustrations really are wonderful.

About the Author
Joshua Miller worked as a social worker, group worker, family therapist, agency director and community organizer for twenty years in Seattle, London, Dublin and Western Massachusetts before becoming a professor of Social Work at Smith College, where he teaches antiracism courses and currently serves as the Chair of the Social Policy Sequence. Joshua continues to do antiracism work in agencies and communities across the United States and has published numerous articles about various aspects of racism and antiracism. He also specializes in disaster mental health and has responded to many disasters, including 9/11, the Asian Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina. He is currently engaged in practice and research for a forthcoming book on culturally responsive disaster mental health in a global context.

Ann Marie Garran has been in practice in New York City since 1992. Her clinical work has been primarily with adolescents and their families, both in outpatient and school settings and has focused on trauma, and issues related to oppression and poverty. Currently, Ann Marie is Clinical Supervisor at the Hunter College Employee Assistance Program in New York, NY. Her primary areas of professional interest include issues of race and social work practice, integration of psychodynamic theory and clinical practice, adolescent mental health, and clinical supervision. She has done antiracism work in communities and agencies, and is a diversity consultant in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Ann Marie has been an adjunct instructor at Smith College School for Social Work since 1999, where she has taught antiracism courses as well as courses in psychological theory and in group theory and practice.

Great Book!

This is a very well written, clear and well organized book on the many issues that affect the helping professions in relation to institutionalized racism. I am a graduate clinical social work student and this was one of my favorite books this year. It is not whine-y, it is well researched, and it was a fascinating and sometimes amazing read. It was great to read and become informed about racism while working with people from many different backgrounds. Even though I was very well versed in the subject beforehand, the way the book presented up to date research and ideas made it an unexpectedly great read.

There is so much to say about this amazing book! I purchased it for a cultural competency course with MCU for my midwifery studies. It's a great book that teaches about white privilege, racism, and what professionals can do to work with a culturally diverse population.
