About the Author
Norman Friedman is a prominent naval analyst and the author of more than thirty books covering a range of naval subjects, from warship histories to contemporary defense issues. He is a longtime columnist for Proceedings magazine and lives in New York City.

Outstanding

This is a difficult book to review by itself. This is because it has its origins in the classic 1985 book "Naval Weapons of World War Two" by John Campbell. Such was the success of the earlier work that a sequel was announced in the mid-'90s. Unfortunately, Campbell died shortly after getting started. Although, he had access to Campbell's research the present volume is very much a Friedman product.

The book is divided into four sections devoted to type of weapons. This is in contrast to Campbell who divides his book into nations. The four sections are guns, torpedoes, mines, and ASW weapons. The gun section is by far the longest at 306 pages. The torpedo section is 44 pages, 26 pages are devoted to mines, and ASW weapons have a mere 16 pages. Within each section the various nations are covered separately in the order, British, German, US, French, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Austrian, Spanish, Swedish, other.

Friedman does his typical thorough job, placing the various weapons in their historical, economic, technical, political, strategic, and tactical contexts. Compared to Campbell the book comes off less as a reference work than as one that can be read on its own for penetrating insights into naval weapons of the period.

The illustrations comprise a good selection of black and white photographs and very well reproduced contemporary drawings. There are also some more recent drawings (for example by Ian Buxton and WR Jurens) but they are from other sources and not especially commissioned for this book.

Friedman's coverage is not quite as extensive as that of Campbell. Friedman includes no guns smaller than the 1 pdr (37 mm) calibre although such guns were used by small craft. Aerial bombs are not covered either. Neither author covered air to air weapons although one might have wished for some coverage of anti Zeppelin weapons.

Campbell's tables are superior to Friedman's; indeed Campbell has a greater variety of tabular information than Friedman. There are a few minor differences in details when weapons (such as the British 15" Mark I) served in both wars. Perhaps specifications changed between the wars?

All in all, this book cannot be recommended highly enough to those with any interest in the subject. Just don't expect an identical format to Campbell's classic work. This is a Friedman book in the best sense of the word.

EXCELLENT AND AUTHORITIVE REFERENCE BOOK

The book covers the guns, torpedoes, mines and ant-submarine
weapons of 10+ navies. The major ones are those of Britain,
Germany, the US, France, Italy, Russia, Japan, Austria,
Spain and Sweden. Other navies' guns, topedoes and mines
are also covered but not in such great detail.

Each of the book's four parts begins with a multi-page
narrative. The extensive photos and diagrams are crisp
and clear. You don't need a magnifying glass to read the
diagram notations.

The only minor shortcoming, in my opinion, is this :
In some instances the shell weight and its explosive
charge are given in kilograms; elsewhere, they are
given in pounds; for the German 42cm gun SK l/45
they are given in both forms: 42cm (16.54in) and 100kg (2204lbs).
Why not use both units of measurement for all entries ?
Some American readers are at a loss when it comes to the
metric system.

All in all, its worth the price and is a valuable addition
to one's military book collection.

Excellent - Indispensable for the WW1 naval enthusiast!

Far more than a mere catalogue of weapons, this book has long chapters devoted to tactics, fire control and the reaction to wartime experience in the differnt navies, which to me at least were the most interesting parts. The book contains a wealth of information and I would consider it indispensable for those interested in the details of naval combat in WW1.

I have a few minor quips. The book could have benefitted from better proofreading and editing, there are a number of minor typos and some paragraphs seem out of place. Also, I would have expected gun penetration tables, but there are none of those. These are minor details hoewever, and the book is well worth the price if you are interested in the subject.

So you're familiar with my background, I received a B.S. in Astrophysics and now I am a first year graduate student in an Applied Math program. I used this book as a supplementary resource when studying Partial Differential Equations - we got to Separation of Variables and then to Fourier Series. Every Physics student who graduates today has at least seen a Fourier Series (I hope). I didn't feel confident in my abilities so I bought this book to review.

Let me tell you, if this is your first time hearing about Fourier Series then this book is simply the BEST book to learn Fourier Series and much of the beautiful underlying theory behind Fourier Analysis! It's so well written and clear that I had absolutely no trouble following the text. I cannot express how clear and beautifully it is written, it is extremely rare for a math book at this level to be so vivid and eloquent! The proofs are easy to follow and the problems ease you into the subject presented in each section; which, in turn, are "bite-sized" and manageable. I studied the material by myself and walked away knowing Fourier Series.

There are plenty of good examples, the problems are great! If you're self-studying (or not) do as many of the problems as you can; if you read the previous two or three sections you should have absolutely no trouble going through the problems. Applications galore!

NOTE: This book isn't written at the graduate level, don't shy away from it because I mentioned being a grad student, I just wanted a review of Fourier Series. If I had to rate the level of the book I would say it's at a beginning upper-division level of a typical american university. If you've had a decent multi-variable calculus class, and are comfortable with partial derivatives, this book should be very comprehensible. It's clearer still to physics majors (or the like) who are more familiar with what and where specific equations apply to.

This book is beautiful, and I think it should be required reading of every physics and applied math student everywhere (maybe I'm just a little biased).

The ONLY caveat is that the Fourier Complex Series is left to problems, we don't get to use them to learn theory and get more comfortable with. This is okay since the cosine and sine series are equivalent to the complex series, it's just that the complex series is more elegant when doing problems or proving things.

If you are an advanced undergraduate student or a begining graduate student and want to learn not only the concepts behind Fourier Series but see how it can be applied to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, then this is "the" book you should read. It is well written - easy to understand and illustrated with lots of examples.

Maa Aankh Volume 2, by Derric Moore

I enjoyed reading the book. I thought it was very detailed and explained the concepts in depth, so that one who is new to Kemetic principles could get a very good grasp of what the author is talking about. He made it easy for those who would like to practically apply these principles to their everyday lives. Of course reading Volume 1 is a good place to start.
I especially loved the layout of the book, and except for typos, it is very beautifully illustrated. As we know, the Kemetic script is very beautiful and seeing the illustrations of the script brought a cohesion to the book, and a level of reader friendliness to a subject that can be difficult to understand at times. It was a very nice touch.

This is a very powerful book...self empowering to say the least. The author combines ancient shamanic knowledge, psychology and various techniques to help the reader heal and gain confidence. Personally this book spoke to me on so many levels. I give thanks to the author for sharing his knowledge and experiences.

I had embarked on a Spiritual journey in quest of knowledge of the self. I had read other books written by so called master teacher that were ok but I still keep on searching because something was missing.well search no further. I found this very powerful gem hidden from a woman's facebook page and ordered it right away. Oh My gosh! The author Mr Derrick Moore in this wonderful book,presents a practical, alternative approach to spiritual path and even demystify this complex concept for us , albeit in a scientific manner.It is a must read for serious students . Mr Derrick Moore is brilliant!
I was thrilled and felt transported Kamit and that GoD is within me, and could not put the book down . I immediately ordered his other publications. Again and again Mr Moore did it masterfully!.
He incorporates study questions, exercises and even algorithms to make impressions on the subconscious as well as definitions that are included to help our memory.

Amy Lisewski is the founder and artistic director of Finest City Improv. She has over twenty-five years of experience in business and the arts. She is a graduate of the Second City Conservatory and has trained with dozens of top improv teachers from all over the country. More awareness = more joy!

I've been improvising for a few years now so I don't need to be convinced how powerful the basic premises of this art form are. I've seen them at work, onstage and in life. That said, this is a terrific book. The first chapter alone is worth the price - seriously, what a great real-life instance of what can happen by making the simplest effort to accept and find agreement with whatever is happening in the current moment. I also love that the author included the "maybe" story. I won't describe or tell the story, but I will say it's a wonderful example of how improvisation and the basic premise of Buddhism "hold hands." It's all about paying attention. The games and exercise in the book will help you discover how to do that a little better, in a very enjoyable way. Wonderful stuff!

Relax, you will be fine... I know the owner of the club

I know the author. So reading her book made it much more enjoyable. And I know some of the people mentioned in the book which was an added treat. Many of the faces on the cover are based on real actors. This book is a very light read, yet some of the concepts are deep allowing for more joy to discovered in our lives. I love the construction of the book too. The cover is vibrant and slick. The internal pages are just the right texture and weight (not too gritty, not too smooth). High quality craftwomanship. However, I gave it 4 stars because some parts towards the middle started to drag and become overfamiliar. Whether for IMprov or life, this book deserves to be on your bookshelf.

Inspiring Book about Saying Yes to Life

I bought this book because I'm thinking of trying an improv class, but I got so much out of the book already. The first two chapters especially spoke to me. The first one is about saying "Yes, And..." to life, instead of "Yes, But..." (which generally means NO). I've said "Yes, But..." a lot these past few years, and it's time to start embracing life and my choices again. The second chapter is about creating without editing. That's a hard one! I'm immediately critical of my creations, artistic and otherwise, so that chapter was very helpful to me. I recommend this book whether you want to try improv or just want some tools for creating more joy in your life.

Solving for the ultimate questions around what defines value, how to capture it, and more importantly how to bring attention to it is a business topic researched and written about more than often than most. Too often the writing is sophomoric, a retread of other musings, or much too conceptual.

This book, on the other hand, seems to get it right. There is rarely a straight line to finding new value, much less marketing it to your customers and clients. This book brings several fresh and provocative perspectives to the table, but not necessarily in the sense that if you just follow their formula it will all come together.

Moving from decades in the corporate world to my own consulting practice a few years ago impressed upon me the important but often missed phenomenon of the ‘echo chamber’. As much as we try to get above the fray and find perspective, day –to-day pressures of needing to ‘pay the mortgage’ too often corrupts well-intended efforts for exploring market complexities and new opportunities.

Matter’s primary thesis presents the ‘disruptive edge’ as the place where true untapped value is found. Discovering that value requires, among other things elevating perspectives and relationships, proposing questions which provoke internal discussions about what it is that is that is too complex for the client to solve on their own and, elevating your impact and thus creating unique value for your firm and the client.

My frame of reference for this work is that of one who has founded his own consulting practice with the passion for partnering with progressive leaders and organizations. This new release brings to that practice a fresh perspective on an area that begs new thinking and fresh ideas.

A meaningful roadmap for discovering your value proposition and purpose

I found this book to be a useful roadmap for thinking about the value proposition and differentiation. If you've been thinking about how to define your purpose or mission, this book will be a great read. The book incorporates a lot of research from Peter's company, so the ideas are well thought out. Instead of just glazing over concepts, he dives deep giving the right amount of context and support.

I was very impressed by Steven Lurie's ability to present in a clear and concise manner, concepts that might otherwise be experienced as too complex and confusing. Using a brief, self-scoring questionnaire, readers are able to determine their own style of relating - analytical, drivers, energizers, or supportives - and understand how their style is likely to come into conflict with others. Readers also learn ways to both broaden their capacity to relate to people with styles different from their own, as well as how to be open to adding qualities of other styles to their own comfort zone. This is a very hands-on book that can clearly be helpful to people working in various organizational capacities. I definitely recommend it.
