A Crime So Monstrous, by Benjamin Skinner

To be a moral witness is perhaps the highest calling of journalism, and in this unforgettable, highly readable account of contemporary slavery, author Benjamin Skinner travels around the globe to personally tell stories that need to be told -- and heard.

As Samantha Power and Philip Gourevitch did for genocide, Skinner has now done for modern-day slavery. With years of reporting in such places as Haiti, Sudan, India, Eastern Europe, The Netherlands, and, yes, even suburban America, he has produced a vivid testament and moving reportage on one of the great evils of our time.

There are more slaves in the world today than at any time in history. After spending four years visiting a dozen countries where slavery flourishes, Skinner tells the story, in gripping narrative style, of individuals who live in slavery, those who have escaped from bondage, those who own or traffic in slaves, and the mixed political motives of those who seek to combat the crime.

Skinner infiltrates trafficking networks and slave sales on five continents, exposing a modern flesh trade never before portrayed in such proximity. From mega-harems in Dubai to illicit brothels in Bucharest, from slave quarries in India to child markets in Haiti, he explores the underside of a world we scarcely recognize as our own and lays bare a parallel universe where human beings are bought, sold, used, and discarded. He travels from the White House to war zones and immerses us in the political and flesh-and-blood battles on the front lines of the unheralded new abolitionist movement.

At the heart of the story are the slaves themselves. Their stories are heartbreaking but, in the midst of tragedy, readers discover a quiet dignity that leads some slaves to resist and aspire to freedom. Despite being abandoned by the international community, despite suffering a crime so monstrous as to strip their awareness of their own humanity, somehow, some enslaved men regain their dignity, some enslaved women learn to trust men, and some enslaved children manage to be kids. Skinner bears witness for them, and for the millions who are held in the shadows.

In so doing, he has written one of the most morally courageous books of our time, one that will long linger in the conscience of all who encounter it, and one that -- just perhaps -- may move the world to constructive action.

From Publishers Weekly
Today there are more slaves than at any time in history, according to journalist Skinner's report on current and former slaves and slave dealers. Skinner's travelogue-cum-indictment focuses most sharply on Haiti, Sudan, Romania and India, and is interspersed with a detailed account of the work of John Miller, director of the State Department Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, or America's antislavery czar. Skinner reiterates that sexual trafficking is only one component of slavery, but devotes the bulk of this book (when it is not following Miller's State Department career) to this issue. The text teeters toward the travelogue, taking the reader to Dubai's most notorious brothel and Skinner's adventures in pos[ing] as a client to talk to women... [or] as an arms dealer to talk to traffickers. Nevertheless, Skinner's story merits reading, and not just because the cause is noble and the detail often fascinating, such as the moral complications of Christian Solidarity International's redemption or purchase of 85,000 slaves' freedom. Skinner's account of the internal workings of the State Department and the deep links to faith-based antislavery groups and their special interests is seriously newsworthy and, at times, moving. Review
"An impassioned expos of a thriving slave economy in the world's poorest regions...An important, consciousness-raising book."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Rigorously investigated and fearlessly reported, A Crime So Monstrous is a passionate and thorough examination of the appalling reality of human bondage in today's world. In his devastating narrative, Ben Skinner boldly casts light on the unthinkable, yet thriving, modern-day practice of slavery, exposing a global trade in human lives. The abuses detailed in these pages are repugnant, but there is hope to be found: by giving voice to the victims, Skinner helps restore their dignity and makes crucial strides toward closing this shameful chapter in history." --Bill Clinton

"In his fierce, bold determination to see the lives of modern-day slaves up close, Benjamin Skinner reminds me of the British abolitionist of two hundred years ago, Zachary Macaulay, who once traveled on a slave ship across the Atlantic, taking notes. Skinner goes everywhere, from border crossings to brothels to bargaining sessions with dealers in human beings, to bring us this vivid, searing account of the wide network of human trafficking and servitude which spans today's globe." -- Adam Hochschild

"A great storyteller, Skinner brings the whole underworld of traffickers and their victims to life. At the same time, he shows how complex the phenomenon really is, and why the solutions of would-be abolitionists in this country have proven misguided or simply futile." -- Frances FitzGerald

"A Crime So Monstrous is a remarkably brave and unflinching piece of reportage and storytelling. E. Benjamin Skinner bears witness, sharing stories so unsettling, so neglected, so chilling they will leave you shaking with anger. This should be required reading for policy makers around the world -- and, for that matter, anyone concerned about the human condition." -- Alex Kotlowitz

"Ben Skinner does a great public service by exposing the massive scope of human trafficking in the world today. I appreciate his chapter on the heroic role Ambassador John Miller played in getting the U.S. government to stand against this evil." -- U.S. Senator John McCain

"This book exposes the horrors of modern-day slavery and human trafficking, demanding attention to an issue that has for too long hidden in the shadows. Skinner's narrative takes us many different places around the world, but can lead to only one conclusion: The U.S. must do more to end this suffering." -- U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

Enriching source which offers insights on various forms of human traffikcing in the world.
By Hugo Gloss
Right now I am in the middle of the book so I can review only the first half. However I found it very enriching and interestingly written. The chapters of this book are written from the "first person view" based on his personal experiences from different locations around the globe. However he also adds interesting facts, outputs from various researches and references on newspaper articles.

During his journey to different places plagued by human trafficking he tells us stories of concrete victims, describes "modus operandi" of local traffickers, the local situation in general and also the effort made by the modern abolitionists.

I highly reccomend this book for everyone interested in the topic of HT as a enriching source which offers insights on various forms of human traffikcing in the world.

Incredibly well-researched, but at times slow
By margieebee
First of all, I certainly learned a great deal from this book. Skinner does an excellent job of providing of a sample of the different types of modern-day slavery that are present worldwide, without exclusively limiting himself or the book to solely sex trafficking or solely agricultural laborers.
At times I couldn't put this book down; I found the chapters on Haiti's child slaves and involuntary prostitution in Eastern Europe particularly engrossing. However, other chapters like those that were more history-oriented detailing the US's in/action on the issues are incredibly fact heavy (names, dates, places), and because of that, were incredibly slow. As someone with little previous knowledge on the topic as a whole, I ended up skimming pages on, say, the history of the Sudan People's Liberation Army. To me, this heavily detracted from the more passionate chapters where Skinner describes his travels and encounters (which are impressive in number) with those enslaved around the world.
Overall, I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in an in-depth look at an important human rights issue with the qualifier that there are certainly some chapters that can be skimmed.

Magnificently written investigation on a stunningly horrific topic
By Robby Barthelmess
This is probably one of the most interesting and well-written books that I have ever read. Skinner is a brilliant author as well as a butt-kicking journalist. His experiences, interviews, and personal connections are completely shared within this book. I was shocked at the experiences that he describes in the work and I was constantly impressed by his well thought out approach to handling such a difficult topic. This truly is a masterpiece. In fact, about a week after finishing it, the message of the book was still sitting in my brain and I was prompted to e-mail Mr. Skinner and thank him for his work.

I am going to buy copies of this book and give it to people interested in the topic of human trafficking. This is a must read everyone.

The Second Edition of the Norton Critical Edition of Robinson Crusoe is based on the Shakespeare Head Press reprint of the first edition copy in the British Museum, with the "errata" listed by Defoe’s publisher, William Taylor, incorporated into the text.

Michael Shinagel has collated the reprint with all six authorized editions published by Taylor in 1719 to achieve a text that is faithful to Defoe's original edition. Annotations assist the reader with obscure words and idioms, biblical references, and nautical terms.

"Contexts" helps the reader understand the novel’s historical and religious significance. Included are four contemporary accounts of marooned men, Defoe’s autobiographical passages on the novel’s allegorical foundation, and aspects of the Puritan emblematic tradition essential for understanding the novel’s religious aspects.

"Eighteenth-and Nineteenth-Century Opinions" is a comprehensive study of early estimations by prominent literary and political figures, including Alexander Pope, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Samuel Johnson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Edgar Allen Poe, Thomas Babington Macaulay, Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill.

"Twentieth-Century Criticism" is a collection of fourteen essays (five of them new to the Second Edition) that presents a variety of perspectives on Robinson Crusoe by Virginia Woolf, Ian Watt, Eric Berne, Maximillian E. Novak, Frank Budgen, James Joyce, George A. Starr, J. Paul Hunter, James Sutherland, John J. Richetti, Leopold Damrosch, Jr., John Bender, Michael McKeon, and Carol Houlihan Flynn.

A Chronology of Defoe’s life and work and an updated Selected Bibliography are also included.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Defoe's classic novel of shipwreck and survival, now nearly 300 years old, is abridged competently in this recording. The flavor of the 18th century language is retained, but the plot moves along at a pace more appealing to 21st century ears. The reader, Martin Shaw, has a pleasant voice, but unfortunately tends to trail off at the ends of sentences, losing whole words. As with all abridgements, large sections of the story and entire characters are omitted, but since most of the book tells of Crusoe's solitary sojourn on the island, this is not a major problem. This version is no substitute for the original, but it would be a supplemental purchase in libraries where abridgements are popular.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-7. The latest title in the Classic Starts series simplifies Defoe's famous survival adventure story, one of the first novels ever written, reworking the tortuous prose into a relaxed, chatty style ("I felt awful") with short sentences that will be accessible to a grade-school audience. True to the 1719 original, the first-person narrative relates how Crusoe defies his parents, runs away to sea, has various adventures, and survives alone on a desert island until he finds a native man whom Robinson calls Friday. The big difference here is that the two men become friends, pals, and equals. There is not a racist word, nothing about Defoe's "savages." For contrast, to spark classroom discussion, pair this with Timothy Meis' retelling, discussed in Focus: "Survivor" (BKL Mr 1 03), which stays true to the prejudice in the original. Hazel Rochman

"Never since childhood have I been so thoroughly immersed in a book" -- Jim Crace Financial Times "An 18th-century reader, raised on a high-minded diet of elegy and pastoral, must have felt stunned on first encountering the jagged prose of a Daniel Defoe, with its street-wise populism and delight in the commonplace" -- Terry Eagleton "Robinson Crusoe has a universal appeal, a story that goes right to the core of existence" -- Simon Armitage Guardian "Defoe should surely be credited with inventing the English novel" Mail on Sunday "Defoe was an imaginative genius" -- John Carey Sunday Times

The first and best escapist novel
By Dr. Morbius
I had never read Defoe's novel until recently. I found it surprisingly well written (very readable to this 21st century reader) and engaging. There are moments when Defoe gets bogged down with Crusoe's journal entries, but I had no idea of the other adventures in the novel that preceded the shipwreck made famous in subsequent retellings in the movies and children's abridgements. It remains a watershed escapist novel as well as a survival manual. Readers will also be surprised that the novel weaves in an ongoing "inner examination" of the castaway's spiritual/religious life as it changes over time and circumstances.

WARNING: This is NOT the original text
By Joshua Q
Defoe helped to define the modern fictional novel when he wrote about the tales of Robinson Crusoe. The book has a strong religious theme, as was Defoe's intention. However, this version of the text censors out some of the language against what Defoe called the Papist Church (or the Roman Catholic Church) as well as some items which would be considered racially insensitive today (but leaving in much of it as well). I don't understand why this version leaves out some of those parts, as they completely change the story that Defoe intended. I'm not sure that Amazon knows these texts are censored (not the original) as there is no allusion to it in the book's description.

Rejuvented version of a classic that was showing it's age...
By Reader
The DK Classics series is a great introduction to the a good range of classic books. Having been raised as a purist, I was a bit uncertain about giving abridged versions of the classics to our kids, but re-reading some of the originals reminded me why some of these classics are loosing their shine- becoming historical artifacts, rather than living, engaging stories. Robinson Crusoe is a prime example of this- although it is nearly an icon as a storyline, it was very much a product of it's time & place, and the world has definitely moved on! But with DK's always-excellent sidebars, giving historical perspective and making the text tangible, and a rather good abridgement, the story becomes possible even for youngish readers. Reviewers who have complained about it being long, slow, overly moralistic or religious should have a go at the unabridged version!
The best thing about this Robinson Crusoe- as well as The Three Musketeers and The Odyssey from the same series- is that our kids really enjoyed them, and are building a good background in writings that have shaped so much of how we view the world. Perhaps they'll read the originals one day- almost certainly in a literature class- and if so they will start with a good understanding of the work.

Brilliantly imaginative, if somewhat tedious.
By Ryan
To the people who hate this book, I grant you the freedom of your opinion, but I have to say, "You don't get it!" This isn't a narrative in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, Calvino has taken complex scientific principles and turned them into stories. Its true that there is a certain lack of character development, as the main character is a one-dimensional atomic particle (pun intended), but even so, Calvino makes him(it?) come alive in his tales. The true feature and attraction of these stories are the situation and worlds that Calvino creates. All that being said, I read this in the same day that I read Cosmicomics, which is a prior collections of similar stories featuring the same character (and, I think, a better book overall), and the artist's conceit wore a little thin. However, if you can give these books sufficient time and space(pun intended again), they are truly fun and beautiful.

I liked it but.........
By A Customer
Not surprisingly the two early reviews give it 1 and 5 respectively: a book about which it is impossible to be neutral. Confusing, dense, boring writing there is - but also some amazing mathematic/scietific concepts whch Calvino masterly spins into stories - the logic/illogic (which are probably simultaneously both the same and opposite) outcomes baffle and amaze. The final section was more rewarding (being more time-space maths based) - couldn't get a handle on the evolutionary/biological stuff. I also suspect I want to read more about the text and continually get beneath its skin. Will read bits again and again and again. (Not a tour de force of narrative analysis compared to "if on a winter's night..." and castle of crossed destinies)

Unconventional, Strange: Calvino
By Aniko Carmean
I love Calvino. I can think of no other writer who can spin a story that has neither plot nor standard characters and yet still give you that soul-thrill of having read a bit of undiluted (if strange) truth. T-ZERO is experimental, even by Calvino's odd-junky standards. A cell narrates the process of mitosis, and the difficulty of loving when there is no absolute, total way to KNOW the beloved. Other stories examine the relationship of time to cause and effect and, yes, Calvino leaves it to the reader to choose either the man or the lion. Prisoners attempt to escape a mutating, hallucinogenic stockade, a man is pursued (or pursuer) in a mathematical allegory set in a traffic jam, and inhuman, pre-historic, pre-life sentients chase the perfect crystals as the Earth forms. The most beautiful stories are in the opening section, MORE OF QFWQF. The story THE SOFT MOON is amazing, but if you read nothing else by Calvino read BLOOD, SEA. The closing paragraph is an inspired culmination of emotional impact. It is perfect, even in translation. Go forth, my friends, and enjoy the wonders of T-ZERO.

Yellow Submarine, by The Beatles

A whole new generation will be climbing aboard this sunny, psychedelic
storybook, while nostalgic Beatles fans of all ages will be clamoring for a ticket to ride.

Once upon a time (or maybe twice), some 80,000 leagues beneath the sea, there lay a colorful land of song and laughter called Pepperland, where Sergeant Pepper's Band was always playing your song — until the Blue Meanies burst on the scene and chased all the music and magic away. So began the classic 1968 film Yellow Submarine, inspired by a song and hailed as an avant-garde amalgam of pop art, Beatles music, and highly innovative animation. Now that film's dazzling images — and its lighthearted, witty tale — is showcased in a glorious picture book sure to be savored by fans and readers of all ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-5–In 1968, the movie Yellow Submarine broke new ground by combining popular songs with clever animation to tell a surrealistic story. This book combines an adaptation of the screenplay with artwork from the film. When Pepperland is threatened by the Blue Meanies and its inhabitants are turned into colorless statues, Captain Fred climbs into a yellow submarine and sets off to get help. After landing in Liverpool, he returns with the Beatles and together they journey underwater through the Sea of Monsters, are sucked into an inside-outside world, and survive the Sea of Holes. Eventually, they return to Pepperland to discover that the Fab Four fit into the uniforms of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. When they begin to sing, everything returns to normal and even the Blue Meanies are transformed into kinder, gentler beings. Trying to translate the ebullience of the movie into a book is a daunting challenge, one that doesn't quite succeed. The text has some of the wonderful puns from the movie, but somehow they fall flat here. Some references might be over the heads of many youngsters. The illustrations combine slightly blurry film cels with pop-art cartoons of the main characters. The color palette is off with some of the yellows turned greenish. Neither the words nor the music of the title song are included. Still, for children who are interested in animation and movies, this book does have a place.–Bina Williams, Bridgeport Public Library, CT

My kids love this story!

Great for the Kids
By Blue Meanie
My two kids are huge Yellow Submarine fans, so this book was a natural fit. The artwork is taken directly from the film, with some slight modifications. The storyline, however, leaves out all of the songs - which in my opinion undercuts some of the story's charm. Gone too are many of the illustrations which accompanied the songs. As a result, you really only get a partial visual retelling.

As a historical comment, since the Beatles has very little to do with the actual movie other than licensing their songs and performing in an awkward two minute appearance in the end of the film, the absence of their music in a book on the subject is both unfortunate and fitting. The absence of much of the film's breathtaking artwork, on the other hand, is inexcusable.

That being said, the actual writing is quite clever. The text does its best to weave in Beatle's song titles into the prose - I suppose as a way of giving some sort of nod to the music which inspired the movie.

The reason I gave it 4 stars is that, despite my nitpickiness, my kids love the book. And if they like it, I'm a happy dad.

I'd suggest watching the movie first if you want to get the full "Yellow Submarine" experience.

However, this book is the perfect gift for any Yellow Submarine fan. It's the perfect thing to bring up those fond memories of the movie. :)
