Stuff about King Tut than you never imagined existed

Collins books are not easy reading, but they give you more information than you will get anywhere else, research that others have not done and offers information you will not find elsewhere.

Like most researchers of biblical era work, he offers a tentative route for the Exodus that is speculation. if you want the real deal on the Exodus route you have to go to Howard Blum.

Interesting, But Not Totally Believable

This is an interesting new angle on the Tutankhamun story. Supposedly Howard Carter found some papyri in the tomb shortly after its discovery. These papyri supposedly contained new information on the early history of the Jewish people. And supposedly this information would place in doubt the historic claim of the Jewish people to the land of Israel.
On one level this is a rather entertaining book because its an archaeological mystery story with sidelights into the occult. On a deeper level it doesn't really hold much water. Regardless of the origin of the ancestors of the Jewish people (and this book has some intriguing material on that subject) nothing can deny that Jews did live in Israel/Judea for many hundreds of years.
Furthermore, thinking about those papyri, the authors can give very little real evidence that they ever really existed, or if they did,that they really contained the explosive material the authors maintain they did.
So, the book is well written, contains some interesting archaeological information on the early history of the Jews and their religious beliefs, and also provides some previously unknown (at least to me) insights into the occult beliefs of Lord Carnarvon and others involved in the tomb's discovery. But as to how accurate it is, and how much stock to place in its theories, I'm much less willing to state an opinion. Buy it if you like mysteries, but look elsewhere for serious archaeological/historical analysis

Endearing Rodent Epic

Even though the story is written as a children's novel, readers of any age will find plenty to love with the three main characters. In the vein of such enjoyable trios as the Three Stooges and Alvin and the Chipmunks, the mice heros (or hoodlums) of this story each flash their personalities in conversation and proceed through the adventurous plotline with their own specific style. The writing is smooth, the moused-sized inventions humorous and the story fluid enough that you might just have to sit down and read it all at once. But don't worry about the time. It is, after all, just a children's book.

Cute Story, But ...

Jean Van Leeuwen's "The Great Cheese Conspiracy" involves a gang of three mice, occupants of a movie theater. Their leader "Merciless Marvin" cases locations on "The Outside" before settling on the nearby cheese shop as the target of their proposed burglary. The balance of this cute children's novel - that will amuse adults, as well - involves the gang's planning and execution of the crime. Some readers may see elements of the Three Stooges or Alvin and the Chipmunks in the trio's antics. I did not find the characters as engaging or well defined as those personalities.

With a nod to the gangster movies of the past century, elements of "The Great Cheese Conspiracy" are unlikely to be familiar to children of the current generation. They may have little understanding of the type of criminal gangs portrayed in this book. Further, while their crime is nonviolent and, in the end, although the Enemy, Mr. Sammartino forgives Merciless Marvin and his cohorts, Fats and Raymond, the book does make it seem as if theft and deception are acceptable. The would-be criminals reap the benefit of manipulating their victim's sympathetic nature to gain a comfortable home and plentiful food - no work required. "Merciless Marvin" eventually determines he is not cut out for a life outside crime and returns "Outside" to seek other opportunities.

Jean Van Leeuwen's writing is clear and easy to read. Younger readers should have little trouble reading and understanding the short chapters. This would be a nice read aloud book for preschoolers and a good vehicle for discussions regarding right and wrong. I recommend parents read "The Great Cheese Conspiracy" before reading it to preschoolers or giving it to young readers in order to determine whether the subject material is compatible with their own values.

A MUST ! MUST ! READ

What a novel! The Sense of Honor is a fascinating tale of survival, sacrifice; and of finding love where and when you least expect it. The lead characters are captivating, scaling what may appear to be insurmountable odds to ensure that their love endures.

The narrative is at a pace where the reader is never bored. You want to be there at Bellewyck -a fly on the wall- and witness to events that come together to make this a riveting good read. You are caught in the wake of the richness of the narrative and the reality of the dialogue, thus feeling every breath, seeing each facial expression, whether be it a smile or wintry stare.

This is a novel you would read non-stop until the very last full-stop! And even when complete, you want to read and re-read this novel.

This book is a MUST for the avid reader.I have been reading gothic romance since age 15 and this book was worth EVERY second I spent reading it.After reading for so many years, some books tend to get monotonous but what I absolutely loved about this one is that it keeps you in suspense from one chapter to the next.Just when you think you have figured out the story,this author suprises you and gives you another twist and keeps you guessing anew!I really identified with all of the characters and would even love to see this made into a movie....by all means, BUY!!!

Fantastic Read

This book was an awesome read from beginning to end and I could not put it down once I started reading. I have read numerous historical/romance novels and this one ranks up there with my favorites. The hero and heroine are such strong characters, and the storyline held my interest throughout. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a historical, romantic, suspenseful read. I cannot wait for the next book from this author! Enjoy!

I've always liked Mr. Walker's sense of humor, and I know of no better example than this book. As far as I know, he invented lots of these terms but I've run across them often enough that I looked for this book.

Not just for the comic artist.

Very funny, yet much deeper than one might think. While obviously useful to anyone involved in drawing comics and animation, I think the appeal will be broader--particularly those interested in most forms of graphical communication, but also, psychology, and linguistics. (It is a lexicon, after all.) Mort Walker captures and documents universal language in this book.

best Joy Division book!

I originally read Ian Curtis wife's book about his life, so I was skeptical that this one would be more biased from the macho male rock point of view. I found this book to be the perfect augment to his wife's book as it showed a different perspective, and what I felt was objective information about Ian Curtis. It also offers a great introspective to the Manchester music scene history and the pivotal people involved. Th book presents a lot of information about Ian, Joy Division, the Manchester music scene and the history of punk rock in this book. An absolute must for any JD fan. I couldn't put it down.

An OK book, could have been better

This book purports to be a "life of Ian Curtis" but, as far as information specifically about him is concerned, it contains noticeable gaps. One gets the distinct impression that the band and family members who were behind this book had a rift with Ian's estranged wife Deborah, who wrote her own book "Touching from a Distance." Deborah's book focused on the minutiae of her teenage relationship with Ian and their subsequent marriage, with very little information given about Ian's band life or creative process - areas which Deborah claimed to have been shut out of. This book covers much the same timeline as Deborah's but seen from a different angle, that of Ian's family, the band itself, and Ian's "other woman", all of whom were discussed to some degree in Deborah's book but did not contribute to it.

The book starts with lengthy reminiscences about Ian as a child and teenager from the standpoint of his family and school friends. Some of this info is interesting but most of it seems to be fairly standard, sanitized family stories. It's obvious that the family were either kept in the dark about some of Ian's more questionable activities and darker sides (such as his drug experimentation), or else they chose to turn a blind eye to it or simply not speak about it for publication. All of this is understandable, but Deborah's book provides a much more complete portrait of the teenage Ian.

The next section of the book gets into the early gigs and recording activities of Joy Division, and is seriously lacking in any viable information about Ian specifically. Terry Mason, Bernard Sumner and even Rob Gretton seem to be more prominent. The major mention of Ian has to do with his attempts to ingratiate himself with RCA executives and others who might help the band, and it's really a footnote to the detailed (in some cases too detailed) discussions of which bands played what gig where on what date and did Slaughter and the Dogs fans cause a riot that night. This section reads more like a history of the early Manchester scene complete with a namecheck of "24 Hour Party People" than a book about Ian Curtis. As others have noted, it is also poorly written and skips around a lot in perspective.

At this point it becomes notable that Deborah is completely omitted from the story except for mentions of how Ian was set apart from the band because he was married with a child on the way (this fact is actually harped on about five or six separate times in case we didn't get the point the first time). It seems possible Deborah chose not to cooperate with or support this book and did not want to be mentioned in it, which would account for the very minor role she seems to play in the story despite being married to the main protagonist. On the other hand, Deborah in her own book writes about how he was always off with the band and not as involved with their marriage and child as he should have been. Ian really seems to have been absent from everyone at this stage, and the implication is that not fitting in with either one of his two lives must have been pretty lonely.

The last half of the book deals with the band's rise to popularity and Ian's extramarital relationship with Annik Honore. The writing is more focused on Ian and his personal thoughts and writings in this section, making it far more interesting than the preceding half of the book. Annik is quoted extensively and one gets the impression that this book was meant to be "Annik's side of the story" just as "Touching from a Distance" was clearly "Deborah's side of the story." Annik's contributions seem designed to counteract her portrayal in Deborah's book as much as to show another side of Ian. It is telling that most of the personal information about Ian in both books comes from women who were close to him, including Annik, Deborah and his friend Lindsay Reade.

Fans of Joy Division who want to read the minutiae about gigs and such will likely enjoy this book. Those who are interested in Ian's personal life should read this book together with "Touching from a Distance" and realize that even after both books, aspects of Ian's character will likely still be elusive. I personally really wanted to like this book, but apart from the material contributed by Annik Honore, found most of it boring and less than insightful.

This is an essential book for the Ian Curtis fan. Deborah's book is pretty one sided, of course. Having Annik's contributions were very nice. The book made me feel very familiar with how Ian acted because I am similar; his lyrics always cut me to the bones. If you would like to know more of Ian's world, I'd read this one first, then Deborah's.

humor makes an otherwise boring subject enjoyable

usualy learining books read like a glorified text book, but not this one, this book keeps your atention, and understands that most people dont simpley drop the book down and stat reading at page one and go to till the end. the book is made to be opened to any chapter and be understandable, a good book, if some what less than comprehensive. a must for beginners.

Daughter loves this, and it makes me wonder if the left-over cheddar in the fridge is still okay to eat if I cut off the mold?

I don't know what this book is about, but my kid does. I can tell it's a 5-star book because she's been sitting on the couch reading it non-stop since it arrived from Amazon, and she won't take a break for lunch. My participation in the Thea Stilton phenomenon includes:

a)learning all the character names and pretending I have a order of my favorites from best to least (sorry, Violet, you're at the back of the pack. I have to pick Nikki as my favorite because that's my daughter's favorite!)
b)drawing Nikki with my daughter, over and over again (I'm pretty dang good by now, I admit)
c)agreeing with my child that the thick, shiny white paper smells really nice (it kind of does) and that the highlighted words are cool (they are)
d)wondering if that left-over Cheddar in the fridge is still any good, and if it's okay to cut off a moldy piece and eat the rest, as long as I leave a half-inch gap between good and mold.

Anyway, thanks to Thea Stilton for writing such fun kid books that help increase a child's vocabulary! I'm glad I don't have to read your books out loud!

I LIKED THIS BOOK. BECAUSE IT WAS A CLEVER STORY. I ALSO LIKED IT BECAUSE IT WAS AWESOME HOW THEY SOLVED THE MYSTERY.I think this was the best Thea Stilton BOOK so far.
I WOULD GIVE THIS STORY 5 stars.

Missed Opportunities and Lacking in Historical Accuracy

I am a fan of most of the Thea Stilton stories, and my seven-year-old daughter loves them. I especially appreciate that the series takes the reader to far away lands and typically manages to teach both children and adults a few thing about distant cultures and history.

This particular volume, however, misses the boat. The story takes place in modern Russia. But for reasons not clear, it treats the Russian nobility as having survived the 1917 revolution and communist era without having lost any of their former wealth and status. Moreover, it misses a great opportunity teach that the Russian language is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, rather than the Latin alphabet that we are familiar with in the West. Instead, we have the sisters reading letters written in Russian, without any reference to the different languages. Perhaps I ask for too much in a book about mice. But this volume is a cut below the others.

Great Introduction to Statistics for MBA's

I read this book just before starting an MBA course called "Basic Statistics". I found the book to be clear, intuitive and it certainly covered all topics we discussed in class. In my opinion, this book presents an easy way to understand Statistics by applying them to real business situations. I still use it as reference at work. Highly recommendable for business people interested in Statistics and with no much background in Math (just make sure you know how to add)

The best stats book for a non-stats person

I manage a group of people who are incredibly skilled in data modeling and business statistics. I purchased this book as a refresher and reference - and was very happy with it. It discusses key statistical issues in simple terms - giving you the tools to handle yourself in any discussion.

Very good, but...

I used this book as a supplement to a crash course in Statistics for Graduate School. It is very good, but it can be a little skimpy on complete explaination of all the variables in an equation.

One good feature of the text is that the next chapter builds on the previous. The complexity of the various statistical equations grows gradually. This is helpful in may respects, but the writer(s) assume that the reader has an EXCEPTIONAL memory and can readily recall details from 1, 2, or 3 chapters back which apply to the current text. I found myself going back and re-reading previous chapters to get a handle on the chapter I was actualy reading.

Overall, the book is good but on one should try to use it as their sole book on business statistics.
