Efficient History and Commentary

This elegant and efficient book combines two things too often separated in books on the Lord's Prayer: history of the prayer and commentary on its phrases. Ayo first elaborates on the petitions of the Lord's Prayer and then introduces classic commentary by sources such as Cyprian of Carthage and Teresa of Avila. Ayo concludes by defining the Lord's Prayer as a collect prayer, a recognition prayer, a mystical prayer, an eschatological prayer, and so on--proving that the prayer's brevity does not limit its depth, versatility, and importance in personal and public worship. The organization of the book is not always intuitive, and the selection of sources at times seems random, but this is still a rich resource for this vital prayer.

Good Case Study Discussion for Ministry Workers

Mahan's book is a basic discussion and outline for ministry workers trying to discuss case studies in their work. Mahan gives a good step by step process for those presenting, facilitating, and critiquing each other in ministry case studies.
I used this book and the process in a doctoral level class and we found it to be helpful--more helpful than discussing our various cases.

Very helpful process

Helping others (layfolks, seminarians, etc) reflect theologically on the ordinary events of life can be a daunting challenge. This book offers a very clear process for helping groups focus their conversation. I have been using this book with Divinity students for several years and find it really practical and successful. It offers a way to open up the conversation and get quickly to a deeper level.

The truth shall set you free...

Unless your mind is open to considering the truth about modern christianity, I would not recommend reading it. This book is an excellent source of all the similarities between the christian and pagan festivals, symbolisms and dogmas. If one has a hard time accepting the facts presented in this book, one merely needs to converse with someone who practices paganism to validate its premise and conclusion. I suggest talking to wiccans about the spring and fall festivals. Even a quick glance at an ecyclopedia will reveal how pagan All Saints and All Souls days are, not to mention Halloween. I find that this book does not delve too deeply into the reasons and hisory surrounding the embracemant of pagan theology by the christian church. For these studies, I reccomend reading Primitave Christianity by Rudolph Bultmann, the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, or simply attending a college course on medieval european history or history of art. The most shocking thing I have found through my own investigation is that people who attend seminary or religious studies for the purpose of becoming a member of the clergy know all about these facts, but choose to ignore them and not teach then based on their blind faith. I have known such people who have left the clergy or gave up on the church because of what they learned in their studies. It is not difficult to confirm the premise and conclusion of this book with a little independent investigation.

Recommended for anyone serious about seeing revival come to America

This is a book that contains mostly of writings by Charles Finney. There is some good practical suggestions regarding revival and how to organize a prayer meeting. I gave it four stars because, while it is good reading with its comic book style inserts, and is recommended for anyone serious about revival in America, it was done with the style that failed to "grip my soul," although I KNOW we need revival in the worst way.

Here we have a militia of the devout, not uncomfortable with violence, who follow their understanding of Biblical law and place it far, far above civil authority.

Phineas was adored by the Lord in the Book of Numbers after he killed an Israelite man and a Midianite woman by running a spear through them to end a plague which was sent by God to punish the Israelites for sexually intermingling with the Midiante people.) Thus, this Priesthood has a long progeny.

The threats they target include "anti-Christians," conventional Judeo-Christian organizations, the Popish idolatry of Catholicism, anyone who supports racial intermarriage, "mixed-blood" people such as Mexicans, and homosexuals.

This book is far from your standard, disenfranchised rant, partially since the Phineas Priests have been a part of several notorious criminal cases, partially because the movement is rigorous and scholarly as it uses Biblical texts to support out-of-bounds beliefs, and partially because the author, Hoskins, is a real writer who grounded his research with lots of contact with Priests (many of whom could only be reached through the mail due to the fact that they were incarcerated!)

Apparently, this book is the first formal explication of (and endorsement of) the Priesthood. It is much more interested in history than in summarizing current sensational events. Hoskins has been around for a while, being the author of the 1958 book Our White Race.

The first edition is from 1990, hardback without dustjacket, black and white pictorial covers. In later printings, Hoskins' name is in an over-sized font. The sewn binding is a cheap one, prone to cracking.

Wonderful book

I have the hard copy ordering the Kindle copy also. This is a wonderful program and it has saved our marriage. We continue to work this program because it has helped us create intimacy and love in a way I never thought possible. The stories and tools in this book are wonderful. I love the thought of a relationship being an infant needing constant care. Well we put that "baby" on the shelf and ignored it.. no wonder we were hurting so much. Now we nurture our relationship and take time for self care and our relationship.

I have read all the books on relationships and this book has more tools that you can put in your toolbox than anything I've seen out there. As we say in our meeting RCA has some great literature and this is the literature. We also enjoy the Step up to Love book.. but this is the one to start with.

I love the reflections and how they put a responsibility for me as an individual. The appendix has some wonderful fair fighting agreements, conflict resolution and the best romance agreements. This book is a must have we wear our copies out. Glad it is available on Kindle now!

Highly valuable tool for couples with dysfunctional history

Clear, practical and relevant. Great tool for use both for recovering couples and in group work. The primary focus on recovery and commitment to each other in a couple, rather than primary focus on the dysfunctional problem, is refreshing for a twelve-step programme. The book makes discussion and connexion for couples possible at difficult times and on difficult subjects. Highly recommended.
Availability of an e-book version is good for anonymity. The other people on the train do not need to know your problems by seeing you reading "The Blue Book"!
