The Rodman that emerges from Bickley's search is intriguing, less a colorful clown of the court than a complex antihero who--from broken-home childhood to Madonna worship to photographer-kicking, wedding-dress-wearing rebounder extraordinaire--has lived his life above the rim and consistently marched to the sound of a drummer so different that no one else could even hear the beat. "I'm not a role model," Rodman readily admits, "I'm a figment of your imagination." In No Bull, that figment is fleshed out with some solid, three-dimensional reportage, interpretation, and analysis.

Bickley, a writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, offers an exasperated overview of the controversial Rodman's life, concentrating on the power forward's recent career and off-court hijinks. It's a brisk narrative, enlivened by quotes (many of them tackily highlighted in large type) from Rodman's colleagues and ertswhile friends. The problem is that those fascinated by Rodman's perpetual jousting with Chicago Bulls management, the cross- dressing, the very public affair with Madonna, and the on-court antics (head-butting an official, kicking a photographer) are likely to remain unswayed by Bickley's contention that Rodman, far from being out of control, has been deftly manipulating the media and fans, while those likely to agree with him would find this expos‚ unnecessary. An excellent source on the "Bad Boy"

This book was awesome. I have read just about all of the sports books out there and I liked the way this one got right down to the basics of Dennis, his life, his childhood, and how he became what he is today. It laid out for me how all the events in his life lead to his present self. Furthermore, the author doesn't attempt to over-analyze Dennis on his own, but rather gives you all the info to let you form your own opinion. I wish all the sports bio's were written like this!!!

About the Author
Estelle Weinstein and Efrem Rosen are both Wadsworth authors. Together they author Teaching Children About Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Second Edition. Combined, they have over 70 years teaching experience. Estelle Weinstein, Ph.D., earned a Bachelor of Science at C.U.N.Y at Brooklyn in Health & Physical Education. She received her Masters of Arts from Adelphi University for Community and School Health Education. She also received her Doctor of Philosophy at Hofstra University. Since 1980, Estelle has served as Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Hofstra University. Estelle has also received several awards including 'Distinguished Service Award for a Professional,' 'Outstanding Professional of the Year,' and 'Faculty of the Year, Hofstra University.' Estelle has written three books, numerous journal articles, resource reviews, and newsletters.

Efrem Rosen, Ph.D. earned a Bachelor of Science at Brooklyn College in Biology. He received his Master of Science degree at Long Island University in Biology and his Ph.D. at Rutgers University in Zoology. He is Professor Emeritus of Biology and Coordinator of the Natural Sciences and Master of Arts in Human Sexuality programs at New College of Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY. Since 1966, Efrem has taught courses in Biology, Ecology, Animal Behavior and Human Sexuality. He is certified in Sex Education and Counseling by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). He is a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of Planned Parenthood of Nassau County and a consultant for education and training in Human Sexuality. He has co-authored two books; one on Sexuality Counseling and the other on Teaching Children about Health, K-6. He also authored several articles on adolescent sexuality and AIDS, which have been presented at several national and state conferences.

the book actually is very useful in that regard

The book itself was not exactly what I was expecting. I routinely expect most textbooks to be dry, informative works with long chapters that realistically need to be chunked. However, this particular little gem does something interesting; its chapters are short and concise, and most of it is in fact lesson plan ideas. If you happen to need ideas for a lesson plan about health or need resources, the book actually is very useful in that regard.

Great Read for those who desire to truly innovate

Brodsky offers a wonderful history of wireless in terms of who and why, something that has been lacking in a wireless history book until this publication. Those interested in understanding the personal connections of the individuals involved through the development of this industry will want to read it. Those who are working in the industry or desire to break in as entrepreneurs need to read it. His last section on creativity is wonderfully useful. If you have the guts to truly innovate, or are doing so now in any industry I highly recommend this book. It was obvious the material was well researched (due to the limited information available on some of the individuals involved from a historic perspective, Brodsky did provide sufficient information to get his many points across, somewhat rare in a book that covers 130+ years through the development of an industry). There was only one element that I would have liked to see him expand on a bit more, and that was in the area of convergence. I think a few more pages devoted to the cable and telephone networks along with wireless would have rounded out this section perfectly; but then maybe not, as it potentially could have risked loosing the true focus of wireless.

Wireless must read

Wireless is an amazing field. How many other products do you own today that you rely on more than wireless? A decade ago you likely didn't mind leaving home sans wireless; now, most of us feel naked unless our mobile (or handy or cellphone) is with us.

As an industry, the statistics are astounding: it's grown from a blip to one trillion dollars annually in wireless service revenue in 2 decades; 1.3 BILLION devices were shipped in 2007; and in 2008, it's the first year in human history when more people on Earth have a cell phone than do not; and would you dream of buying a laptop without wireless connectivity?

Unless you've been in the industry since the 1980's (as I have), it may be hard to fathom how the wireless industry came to be. Ira Brodsky successfully tackles the breadth and depth of wireless to create a readable and enjoyable understanding of the technology, the industry, and the pioneers who've created what none of us can live without.

I would recommend this book to all who enjoy reading the thread of history, or want a better understanding of what the future of OFDMA, WiMAX, LTE & 4G holds.

A review of "History of Wireless.."

The book is a brief and concise history of the persons involved in the creation of "wireless" as we know it today. There is some technical detail, enough to associate a person with a patent or concept, but the book is more about the people, not the wires. (Or the lack thereof.)
Especially satisfying was that the book did not waste any ink on the show-business aspects of early broadcast radio, nor the gory details of patent disputes.
The technical detail thickened up as the discussion got to cell-phone technology, but then modern radio has gotten vastly more complex.
The book is a good summary. I recommend it.
