About the Author

William Hustrulid has more than 40 years of experience in mining engineering. He has worked all over the world as a Professor of Mining Engineering, in R&D positions and as a consultant. He currently holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at the University of Utah and manages Hustrulid Mining Services in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Mark Kuchta has almost 20 years of experience in mining engineering, research and teaching and has worked in the United States and Sweden. At present, he is an Associate Professor of Mining Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines.

A very useful book

That what I was looking for for years. It is a very comprehensive introduction to mine planning and organization which gives basics about important tasks as geostatistical analysis applied to orebody characterization, block modeling, pit planning and organization, costs analysis and economical management. I found really useful in particular the enclosed user-friendly software which allows to practice with book contents in a practical environment and is completed by the rich database full of data from real situations. A really useful tool for practicing before coping with more complex (and expensive) mining software programmes.

This review of the first edition is a must have for anyone who is related with open pit mine planning. It is also a great book for mining engineering students. The concepts are clearly presented, and very well organized. The complete process of mine planning from the early stages to the production scheduling is described.

The book goes into some very pertinent issues regarding open pit planning. This is a must book for a general understanding and some in depth understanding of how to go about the design of an open pit and it's issues. Of course all pit are different in their own way with their own individual issues, but this is a must for anyone working in the field.

If you want to have a deeper understanding of the basics of Islam and get rid of the misconception, you need to read this. I had to read this book as part of my coursework with Dr. Mandaville and his lectures were as great as the reading itself. Dont listen to the illiterate politicians and read good materials like this and you will have a proper understanding of the subject.

About the Author
Christophe Pourny is one of the most esteemed furniture restorers in the business. Descended from a long line of artisans, he was reared in his father’s atelier in the South of France and apprenticed at his uncle Pierre Madel’s legendary antiques shop on rue Jacob in Paris. Today, Pourny restores furniture out of his own atelier in Brooklyn, New York.

Usually I'm the seller...this book made me a buyer

Rarely do I find a book I feel like I have to own; I read "The Life-Changing Method of Tidying up" and I follow it...I don't own things I don't love and have gotten rid of most of my books. If I want to read one, I borrow it from the library. I checked this book out from the library on a whim...then maxed out my renewals because I didn't want to give it back. There were a lot of "ah-ha" moments and terrific instructions with an excellent lay-out. Pourny gives wax recipes and the reason for the ingredients and the amounts and good instructions for polishing and stripping. Even if you don't refinish or repair furniture, it's worth it to know how to maintain what you own. The library will be glad I bought my own copy.

Excellent resource and entertaining read.

As someone with related experience in the trades I found this book to be clear, informative, and wide in scope. There is plenty of content that will satisfy a wide spectrum of people with varying interests and abilities. On one end people interested in furniture style and history will be able to also have a glimpse into how the actual finishes and techniques are created, restored and maintained. Those with a strong practical side will be able to make a connection to the evolution of furniture styles and how they form a visual vocabulary that helps us understand the elements of design that we see in all the varying types of furniture around us today. The pictures are clear and the drawings are charming. Truly a wide range of information with something for everyone all done with taste, style, and humor. I especially liked the photos of all the tools used in the trade. Highly recommend for the casual reader to the informed craftsperson.

I can't wait to revive a Widdicombe mid-century mod bachelor's chest I bought much worse for the wear--but well made and rock solid. I can revive the drawer fronts' original finish, repair veneer and stain the more damaged body with Pourny's not-quite ebonizing technique. I'm so glad I got this book.

Each technique--stain/oil or shellac finish, French wax polish, two degrees of ebonizing (true ebony and not-quite), gilding, repairs, hardware aging, etc.--is illustrated with step by step photos of what he does and clear, concise instructions. He gives a list of tools and materials up front, so you'll have what you need start to finish. And he names names in terms of products to use, so you'll get the one he himself relies on. And a huge advantage over other furniture makeover guides, he has exquisite taste. He understands the history of a style and works in ways to enhance it, not obliterate it, as did the mistake-book on furniture makeovers I also got. (Oh what awful, ugly things were done.)

Pourny suggests you have a DIY refinishing 'kit' on hand that fits your available space: what fits in a box (the bare necessities), a shelf, or a whole wall (soup to nuts). Having the right tools and materials are critical, but what he specifies is not exotic. His directions are thorough and exacting, but not at all intimidating. Best of all, the results he achieves are spectacular, and to some degree achievable, even by me.

An excellent addition to our collection

I bought this as a gift for my HB ... who was more FLW books than I can count at this point. (Almost all of them purchased by me over the years for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) We're starting to run out of material! This book is significantly different than those that are focussed purely on the architecture, discussing much more about the materials FLW used and how the design elements affected living spaces. The photographs are beautiful and the text is well written. I'm glad I found this one!

Very good synthesis of Wright's work

I really liked this book. Quite well structured, it presents first key characteristics of Wright's architecture apearing in Prairie but also Usonian houses.

The second part gives full details of some houses (mainly Usonian since the theme is about "making small houses feel big")

Special interest for Isabel Roberts house, River Forest (on front and back cover pages) which is to my mind Wright's Masterwork joining Prairie and Usonian concepts.

Photos are nice and drawings are also indicated (with scale and orientation).

The only point I disliked is the fact comments relative to photos are not always fully precise : they could have highlighted a bit more key characteristics quoted in book's first part. The author has also preferred giving some details about Owners rather than focusing only on architecture.
