This intriguing, futuristic thriller conceives of a terrifying future for the United States.
In his thought-provoking book Fire War, T. T. Michael creates a country where the highest office is no longer elected by the populace and there is no longer unemployment--where the only real fear is of the terrorist group Hariq Jihad (Fire War).
Gunnery Sergeant Anthony Jackson is charged with protecting the president of the United Continental States of America (UCSA). As Jackson comes to the realization that not everyone is happy with the current situation in the country, everything he holds dear is imperiled. What will happen to the country, and Jackson, if the concepts of personal liberty and the safety of the country cannot be balanced?
Michael's futuristic political thriller has a chilling ring of truth to it. As current events unfold, comparing Michael's fiction with today's reality sometimes becomes overwhelming. Michael describes a world where personal liberties and individual rights have vanished for the good of the group. No one has a say in who runs the country or what decisions are made by the president, a man that everyone trusts...but should they?
Tapping into our fears and trepidations, Michael has written a story that hits close to home for anyone who follows current events. In one instance, he writes that "immigrants had to learn that the only way into the UCSA was the legal way, and that they would risk death by trying anything else."
Anthony Jackson is an interesting protagonist. He is a rule-following, hard-charging marine who clearly loves his family and country. He takes his position guarding the president very seriously, yet he seems to ignore some of the signs of impending trouble that one would expect a razor-sharp military man to catch. This seems to be Michael's way of creating a Greek tragedy format: the chorus singing warnings in the background, with the fallible hero ignoring them until it is almost too late.
Jackson's struggles with his daughters, particularly Maya and her "radical" ideas of personal freedoms, feel real. Even into this future, teens are still testing limits and putting their parents in difficult situations. Jackson's everyday family life adds significantly to the tension of the story by making us know about and care for the people he is most interested in protecting...after the president, of course.
Thriller fans will find this book intriguing and, to some extent, terrifying in its plausible predictions for our future in the United States.

Anything that has a disaster type theme to it i'm always game to read, this book included. It's a good book to read in between series like I did, especially before getting into another set of series books. Book description fits the book completely and it's consistently suspenseful. It examines the paradoxes of power, the price of liberty, and the dictates of conscience. Although what happens in the book I really hope never really actually happens, but it could always happen depending on how the world keeps going. But defiantly a good buy, author & book!

Well-written Thriller!

I got this book at a discounted price for my honest opinion of it and I absolutely loved it! Thrilling, surprising, exciting, chilling are some of the words I that describe this book. It is a plot one would hope never really happens, but recognize that it is not at all an impossible scenario. A definite page turner, it was difficult to put down. Fire War will keep you engrossed and a little on-edge while reading it, and remain in your thoughts long after you complete it. That in my estimation is the mark of a well-written book.

When I got the book and read it, the story is great. So I'm collecting the collection. So I can read them over and over again. I love these chapter books! And I hope they make more because they're making lots of pets.

Lily has been one of my favorites so far out of all these books!

contemporary guardian-ward romance

Heroine has been in love with her guardian Hero since she was 15 & set out to make him notice her as a woman since she became his ward at 17. Unfortunately he didn't see her as a potential lover & even sent his various girlfriends-of-the-moment to vacation with her instead of taking him herself. The one time he did take her himself ended up with heroine declaring her love for him & proved to be embarrassing for both of them. Now at age 19 heroine is resigned that Hero would never see her as a lover. She wants to be independent from him now instead of waiting 2 more years before she has full legal control of her inheritance. But Hero doesn't think she's capable of protecting herself from fortune hunters so he proposes a marriage of convenience until she's 21. Heroine takes advantage of their temporary marriage & tries to make him love her. Her plan seems to work especially when Hero finally makes love to her. But the reappearance of Hero's old girlfriend instills doubt re: the permanence of their marriage.

Heroine may sound like a doormat but she wasn't. She just knew what she wanted & went for it. It showcased her inner strength (her stubbornness, resilience, & positive view of problems) to not be discouraged by Hero's lack of interest in her as a lover for the 2 years she lived with him as his ward & the 1st year of their marriage. She wasn't self-pitying. When she gave her best shot at something & it didn't work out, she moved on to her next plan.

I liked that we get both Hero & heroine's POVs. I could clearly see where their misunderstandings were & rooted for them to figure them out at some point. I liked that Hero chose to be celibate during the 2nd year as heroine's guardian b/c he was done with his casual-sex lifestyle. He didn't stray during their 1st year of their celibate marriage either. Once he realized he was in love with her, he tried his best to win her love. He was a sweetheart of an alpha Hero.

So, I chose this book because it had a "marriage of convenience" storyline.

I must say that I found the book to be just ok.

I first felt sorry for the female character, because she had lost her parents at a young age and was stuck with a grandparent that was overly critical about any and everything she did, and just really didn't want her around, and therefore, requested that the make character take over the raising of the girl as a teenager. But then as the story went on (years passing) the female character really got on my nerves with all the unnecessary bad behavior, whining, and misunderstood communication with the male character.

With the male character I first applauded him for taking on the care of the female character, and again as time when on, I didn't quite understand how he could misunderstand some of her actions, as well as be bad with his communication, considering he was a successful business man.

As I said above this book was in my opinion just ok.

Mercer is the man (if I remember correctly).

Both professors and students quote hooks, Hall, and Bhabha all the time, yet few refer to Mercer's work. I find this to be such a wasted opportunity. In this collection, he writes on diverse topics such as Robert Mapplethorpe, black hair, Michael Jackson, etc. I saw him once in person and he kinda reminds me of a black George Michael. This was strong cultural studies that I think many black thinkers and gay thinkers (and when I say "thinkers" that includes "paper writers) should find useful. I don't agree with all of his conclusions. Still, there is so much here that would make any paper in cultural criticism look very well informed. My only question for the author would be: "When are readers going to get more great works of yours like this out there?!"

I bought this book in order to teach myself all of the Spanish verb tenses and it worked! I eventually learned them all in class but doing the exercises in this book made them beyond easy for me when the professor got to them. I had a mastery of the verb tenses that impressed everyone....and I didn't tell them my secret....well I did tell one person, I think. :)

As in everything, there are some unavoidable tasks to master. Bey has made this relatively painless, and her drills are terrific ! Highly recommended for someone who is brushing up high school Spanish.

Like the title says- DRILLS

This is strictly a drill book. No explanations of how, when or why to use the tenses; just drills. I like that they go through all the tenses and the subjunctive mood with regular verbs first, then the last half of the book drills all the tenses with irregular, stem-changing, orthographic changing verbs. Gets you confident on your knowledge of the endings, and then throws the monkey wrenches in. I've been using this book for about a week and it has really improved my verb conjugations. These very repetitive drills that I would never construct on my own have proved very helpful. Especially transforming between the conjugations.

Not Just Another Singles Book Author!

Having been single by choice for the majority of my adult life, I've probably read a couple of hundred books on the subject, so you could say I'm a bit of an expert when it comes to the subject! Having said that, I absolutely have to take this opportunity to spread the word LaVonia Tryon's book "Not Another Singles Book." Within the first few minutes of reading this book, you'll agree that a book's title has never described a book's content more accurately. Instead of blurting insincere cliches at the reader, Tryon uses her own life as an example, assuring her readers she's in the trenches alongside us as we struggle in this war of trying to maintain our self-worth in the midst of a lifestyle of singleness that can just be downright heartbreaking at times. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all the singles who are sick of the cliches, desiring to redeem their single years and not waste them, and are seeking a different approach to singleness that is sure to leave them filled with hope, ready to become the kind of people with whom they'd fall in love.

Being single again for the past 4 years after a 26 year marriage, I have read a lot of singles books. Obviously I don't know how to do this..I need help. This book definitely lives up to its title. Reading this book has changed my attitude toward my singleness. The fact that it is backed up by scripture and filled with bible references, puts a whole new perspective on being single. I know now I've been doing it all wrong. Thank you for showing me the way through this book. I'm excited about the present and the future. Thank you LaVonia, your book has been a blessing to me.

This book is truly amazing and has opened up my eyes to what it means to be a single woman in Christ. In the book, Lavonia goes through the different stages of what singles of today's society go through and than how to deal with it and look at it from gods perspective. She has really taken the time to back up what she is trying to say with scripture and then adding her own testimony to encourage others.
I have learned how to make the most out of my singleness instead of others trying to teach me how to get out of it.
