About the Author
David Estes was born in El Paso, Texas but moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he was very young. He grew up in Pittsburgh and then went to Penn State for college. Eventually he moved to Sydney, Australia where he met his wife. A reader all his life, he began writing novels for the children's and YA markets in 2010. David is a writer with OCD, a love of dancing and singing (but only when no one is looking or listening), a mad-skilled ping-pong player, and prefers writing at the swimming pool to writing at a table.

Slow to start, but gets better!

I bought this based on the rave reviews I read here on Amazon. And I have to admit, initially I was disappointed. The two main characters indulge in long, meandering internal conversations, a lot of which is completely irrelevant. Even when they're talking to somebody, each sentence in the conversation is interrupted with a lengthy thought process - honestly, they would be incredibly annoying to talk to! You'd say something and then have to wait in silence for five minutes while they analysed everything you said before replying. Adele even acknowledges this in the middle of a discussion.

"I still haven't answered Cole's question. I'm not sure how long it has been since he asked it, but probably a while, because he is looking at me strangely, like I have poo on my face or something. While I've been battling with myself in the comfort of my own head, I can only guess at what weird facial expressions I was making."

Adele has much-touted 'trust issues' which don't seem to stop her from immediately trusting the first two people she meets in the book. One day, she's a self-professed loner, then literally less than forty eight hours later she's part of a group who divulge their deepest secrets, risk their lives for each other and have a connection like they've been BFFs for years. It seems weird.

The two main characters are also a bit unbelievable and stereotypical. A poor, wronged heroine, stunningly beautiful of course despite her trauma, with mad fighting skills, risking life and limb to save her family. The handsome hero with tousled blonde hair, rich and coveted by women all over the planet, with daddy issues that make him want to get out and slum it with the 'normal' people. He even has a goofy sidekick.

Thankfully, things improve drastically when the action starts. There's plenty of action and intrigue to keep you moving through the story.

I bought the next book and will continue with the series. Part of my motivation was due to the 'mysterious secret' that suddenly appears at the end of the book as a rather obvious ploy to get you to buy the next book!

Amazingly written dystopian

I would like to thank David Estes for giving me a copy of this book. However, this fact does not affect my thoughts about this novel.

The Moon Dwellers was something I was excited for. And to make sure it's something I would like, I read the prelude of the story, which David shared in his blog, and the preview (first chapter) he offered in Smashwords. It didn't make sense at first, of course, but I got more excited because the first chapter was intriguing and the writing style is clean.

Two main things make up this novel, a brewing war and the romance. If you're not a big fan of insta-love, I suggest you put that dislike aside and give this book a try. It's unique and different in a way, it gives a new meaning to love-at-first-sight and leaves the romance time to develop. You'll see.

Like any other dystopian story, there is a bigger task at hand other than the romance and I like that the female protagonist's focus is on that task rather than just gushing over a guy, although there were parts that she does that, she still sets her feelings aside for the greater good.

Each chapter is written in alternating first-person POVs of Tristan and Adele. The whole story is one big adventure for both parties (Tristan and Roc; Adele, Tawni, and Cole). And each party gets caught in a situation that seems inescapable but would eventually get through it by sheer luck and coincidence. I was literally hanging on at the edge of my seat every time each party gets in danger.

I love all the main characters and their relationships! Tristan and Roc's friendship is one of my favorites. The bromance is overwhelming that I even made comments about them being the real couple in the story. The friendship between Adele and Tawni and Cole is also something, Adele only met the two but they stuck with each other till the end. As for Tristan and Adele, techncally there's no relationship yet, only an attraction that no one can explain.

One would say that there is a lot of coincidence in the story, that it's unrealistic, too planned. Don't forget that this is fiction and the author can do whatever he wants as long as it makes sense and comes out good. Plus, the coincidences that occurred in the story is something that we often see in movies or TV shows. Who's to say similar coincidences don't happen in real life?

A fabulous work of art appropriate for all ages

Wow, what an amazing journey into a completely unique world. This Dystopian/Urban Fantasy Novel stole my breath. Journey under the earth's crust after post apocalypse into the tri-realms for an emotional adventure ready to sweep you into it.

Adele is a 17 year old girl sentenced to life in prison because her father dared to question their unfair existence. For six months she has held her own in the juvenile detention center while waiting for her 18th birthday only to be transferred to a maximum security prison. She is a moon dweller, in this dystopian novel a moon dweller is the middle class but don't let that fool you most of their neighborhoods are slums.

Tristan is a Sun dweller, Prince of the Tri-realms, first born son to the President. Sun dwellers have been taking advantage of the moon dwellers and even lower class Star dwellers for 500 years. However Tristan is unique and feels his father's tactics are unethical and disgusting.

One day while fulfilling his princely duty he is in a parade that passes Adele in the yard on the detention center, their eyes meet and Adele feels an instant connection to him. That had to be her imagination right?
Follow Adele and her band of rag tag friends in their mission to escape prison and rescue her father from the work camp he has been sent to. At the same time fate leads Tristan away from his Palace in his journey to escape his existence as the "Prince" of the realm.

Will they meet? Do they feel the same connection?

This was a fabulous work of art appropriate for all ages. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this sweet and fantastical world from the amazingly creative David Estes.

About the Author
J.G. Farrell was born in Liverpool in 1935 and spent a good deal of his life abroad, including periods in France and North America, and then settled in London where he wrote most of his novels. In April 1979 he went to live in County Cork where only four months later he was drowned in a fishing accident. INTRODUCER BIOGRAPHY: John Sutherland is Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature at University College London and currently teaches at the California Institute of Technology. He writes regularly for the Guardian and is the author of many books including The Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction, biographies of Scott and Spender, and The Boy Who Loved Books, a memoir.

About the Author

Dan Pilone is a Senior Software Architect with Blueprint Technologies, Inc. He has designed and implemented systems for Hughes, ARINC, UPS, and the Naval Research Laboratory. He also teaches project management, software design, and software engineering at The Catholic University in Washington D.C. Dan has written several books on software development, including UML 2.0 in a Nutshell (0-596-00795-7) and UML 2.0 Pocket Reference (0-596-10208-9), both O'Reilly.

Russell Miles is a senior consultant for SpringSource in the UK where he works with various companies to help them take full advantage of the Spring Framework. To ensure that he has as little spare time as possible, Russ contributes to various open source projects while working on books for O'Reilly.

The Head First series scores again

I've read and reviewed several of the "Head First" series of books on programming languages and software design, so I thought I would give this one a try too. Unlike so many books on software development, this one doesn't start with a terse and rather useless overview chapter. Instead it clearly tells you who this book is for: Those who have a background in programming, specifically Java, who want to learn techniques for building and delivering software. First the book explains the Head First concept in learning - using puzzles, cartoons, graphics, and anything else that should stick in your head to explain the usually dry topic of software engineering.

The first three chapters - "Great Software Development", "Gathering Requirements", and "Project Planning" - talk about how software development usually goes wrong and talks about some of the methods for organizing your efforts. Chapter 4 puts some of these ideas in motion when the book analyzes the development of a mythical application, iSwoon. The book has the application get into serious trouble and then shows you the way out of the abyss using good software design methodology. Next, the book has you adding features to "BeatBox Pro", which is an application from the "Head First Java" book. This is where your ability to understand Java code comes into play. The book also discusses the use and usefulness of the Ant build tool for Java projects. However, this is a book on how to approach the design of the software, not how to perform the detailed coding, so having somewhat rusty Java skills should be acceptable. Throughout the book are puzzles, Q&A sessions, and "There are no dumb question" sessions that really drive home the points being made. The following is the table of contents for the book:

About the Author
Kate L. Turabian (1893–1987) was the graduate school dissertation secretary at the University of Chicago from 1930 to 1958. She is also the author of The Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers. Wayne C. Booth (1921–2005) was the George M. Pullman Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. His many books include The Rhetoric of Fiction and For the Love of It: Amateuring and Its Rivals. Gregory G. Colomb (1951–2011) was professor of English at the University of Virginia and the author of Designs on Truth: The Poetics of the Augustan Mock- Epic. He is coauthor, with Wayne C. Booth and Joseph M. I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

Required information in an awkward form (Kindle)

I purchased this edition of Turabian as a Kindle book. I own several earlier editions in paper but needed a more current one to match references from an editor. The update is good in terms addressing several modern reference techniques in bibliography and footnote format. But the Kindle edition is difficult to navigate to the extent that it is nearly useless. If you do not need to use Turabian, count yourself lucky. If you are forced to use it, then purchase a paper copy.

Last self-published book for me

One of the problems of self-published books tends to be lack of editing, and this book suffers from it. Ms. Quy needed to have input from an objective third party editor with experience to improve this book by eliminating repetition, removing errors and using a greater variety of examples from Ms. Quy's life besides a few years in her childhood and her first few years (of 24) in the FBI.

As for the message, reddit.com users have a synopsis called TLDR for long posts. The TLDR for Secrets of a Strong Mind is "work hard and don't give up". Hardly a new message, albeit presented in a unique way.

Well-Researched Edition of Eureka by Stuart and Susan Levine

The rest of the reviews on this page are about Poe's Eureka, a brilliant piece of literature that threatens to solve the riddle of life, the universe, and everything.

I just want readers to see that this is not another ordinary reprint of Eureka, which has lost copyright and so is freely available on the internet, along with all of Poe's work. Why buy a $20 book when you can get it for free? I'll tell you why.

This book edited by Stuart and Susan Levine goes by Poe's proposed edits that were not published. Each page has 51 pages of footnotes after the text, explanations of what Poe was saying in relation to the understanding of his day, referring to his tremendous store of ancient and current books he had read in latin, greek, french, italian, german, spanish, and english. This edition is for someone who really wants to understand where Poe was coming from when he wrote Eureka.

Be careful buying the used copies on this page, as most or all of them (and all the rest of the reviews on this page so far) are not the edition of Eureka edited by Stuart and Susan Levine. I usually buy used, but this time I bought new.

Poe's Pinnacle Work on the Creation of the Universe

Written in 1848, Eureka, one of Edgar Allan Poe's last works, propounds his theory of the creation of the material and spiritual universe. In his preface, Poe says "...it is as a Poem only that I wish this work to be judged after I am dead." However, a reader would find it hard to consider Eureka a poem of any sort when the author spends three-quarters of the work expounding, through philosophical proof, a scientific belief in an essay format. Poe's belief is that "Gravity exists on account of Matter's having been radiated, at its origin, atomically, into a limited sphere of Space, from one, individual, unconditional, irrelative, and absolute Particle Proper, by the sole process in which it was possible to satisfy, at the same time, the two conditions, radiation and equable distribution throughout the sphere-that is to say, by a force varying in direct proportion with the squares of the distances between the radiated atoms, respectively, and the Particular centre of Radiation."
As a scientific or philosophical discourse on astronomy, Eureka is a work ahead of its time. Poe went step by step using undeniable comparisons, similar to a geometric proof, to conclude with the aforementioned statement. He begins by proposing his theme that "In the Original Unity of the First Thing lies the Secondary Cause of All Things, with the Germ of their Inevitable Annihilation." He means that through the only Ultimate Principle-the Volition of God, the Universe was created. Within this creation there is an inherited yearning to return to the Original Unity. Poe further explains his theory which is extremely similar to the Big Bang Theory. During creation, the Will of God produced a reaction within a finite space, causing the Original Unity to separate and disperse (or radiate). After the force of creation, "Gravity", an equal but opposite force began to exert itself. This force, proven through Newtonian experimentation, is now contracting the universe back into the "One" or "Original Unity." That is how Poe explains the existence of Gravity along with the dispersion of galaxies, stars, planets, and moons.
But as a literary piece, most readers would drop the book within the first ten pages. Poe's diatribe succeeds in alienating the modern reader through his references to seemingly unknown astronomers and physicists from the 18th and 19th centuries such as Laplace, Comte, Dr. Nichol, M�dler, Lord Rosse, and many others. The usual motifs found in his short stories and poems are missing within the pages of Eureka. What is retained is his compounded clause sentence structure and his sense of self-worth. In many instances, Poe describes scientists' discoveries as being correct, but driven by instinct instead of reason, unlike his own. Interestingly, throughout his essay, he uses the words Divine and God very often. It leads one to believe that since this is written at the end of his life, that maybe he has begun to fear what is to come. Yet this uncharacteristic Poe disappears in the last page in which he states that "Man will at length attain that awfully triumphant epoch when he shall recognize his existence as that of Jehovah." Here Poe, the short story writer, returns as the curtain falls, letting us all know that there is no God but the Unity of ourselves, which of course includes himself.

Very Interesting----Poe wrote this???!

Ok, I was shocked to see a science book written by Edgar Allan Poe. He himself calls it a poem...ok, Poe, poem.

I'm into astronomy so I thought, why not? Well, here's the thing. It strikes me as a serious work---a sort of explanation of how the Universe was seen in 1848. I found the reading to be a grind from time to time. I wondered why I was reading "outdated" science. I wondered why I was reading Poe's outdated science. Sometimes I was bored with it.

Then again...sometimes I was really gripped by the thoughts and the expressions...man, this guy can write. And I was continually amazed at his knowledge...not only just for the time. And then I felt a connection. A connection I felt for those who've grappled with the same issues in the past but with less information than we have today. I'm learning too and am part of that chain of learning...hard to explain. The ideas, some even wrong ideas, are stimulating. THe thoughts stimulate.

In short, yes, I'm glad I read it. I'm glad I bought a hard copy to add to my library. And something will pull me back to it for reference from time to time----I know that already!

Not worth the Time and the Money

I am a student who happens to have read both John Hull's 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' and his 'Fundamentals'. To say that 'Options, Futures and Other Derivatives' is a good book is a great understatement, and can even be considered an insult. Yet, this book, which is targeted at readers who are not as acquainted with derivatives fails to impress. Through out the book you can feel how John Hull struggles to explain things in a simple manner. Sadly, his efforts have failed, and this is most evident when my fellow classmates had a hard time understanding the materials starting from Swaps. When we reached the section on options pricing, the book lacks the rigorous math that is needed for students to fully appreciate the beauty of deriving things like Black-Scholes. Overall, if you are a beginner, go straight to 'Options, Futures, and Derivatives'. This book is not worth wasting time over.

Ripoff + Worthless

Long story short, this book is a ripoff and won't help you much on learning about futures markets and options. As a 4th year finance student, I can without any doubt say my learning experience has never been this miserable! Here's a summary of what it's like:

1. Language: Wording is terrible. Definitions are wordy, hard to understand in general, and you will encounter typos quite often.
2. Practice questions: To see answers for the practice problems at the end of each chapter, you have to purchase a separate book that costs over $40 and answers for "further questions" are not even given unless you register yourself as an instructor on the Pearson website.
3. In some questions, data don't match (e.g. in one of the questions he requires us to find a margin requirement in Oct 2010, while the data he gives ranges from 2013 to 2015 - wake up Mr. Hull! smh..) as if the author didn't give a crap about "his students".

I spent 4 months with this book for I was required to read it for class, but I can surely say it is a book that gradually annoys its readers as time proceeds. Please persuade your instructor not to use this book if you are enrolled in a class dealing with this matter. I am serious.

why are we still playing these games in 2007?

By games I mean the fact that the answers to about a third of the questions are found in a solutions manual that, last time I looked (in early Sept '07), was unavailable for purchase. The answers to another third of the questions are not to be found anywhere. The answers to the last third of the questions are in the book--but these questions are not very interesting or challenging. Why must we play this game? Why not just put all the answers in the back of the book? (I know, I know: it's all about the money, etc. But still . . .)

As for the content of the book, I'm told that this isn't Hull's authoritative book (that would be 'Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives'). I feel like a sucker for having bought it. Is it good to make your customer's feel like suckers, Mr. Hull?
