Countless Christians — including scores of saints — have suffered profound, pervasive sorrow that modern psychiatrists call “depression.” Then, as now, great faith and even fervent spiritual practices have generally failed to ease this wearying desolation of soul.
In these pages, Catholic psychiatrist Aaron Kheriaty reviews the effective ways that have recently been devised to deal with this grave and sometimes deadly affliction — ways that are not only consistent with the teachings of the Church, but even rooted in many of those teachings.
Extensive clinical experience treating patients with depression has shown Dr. Kheriaty that the confessional can’t cure neuroses, nor can the couch forgive sin. Healing comes only when we integrate the legitimate discoveries of modern psychology and pharmacology with spiritual direction and the Sacraments, giving particular attention to the wisdom of the Church Fathers and the saints.
Here, with the expert help of Dr. Kheriaty, you’ll learn how to distinguish depression from similar looking but fundamentally different mental states such as guilt, sloth, the darkness of sin, and the sublime desolation called “dark night of the soul” that is, in fact, a privileged spiritual trial sent to good souls as a special gift from God.
You’ll come to know how to identify the various types of depression and come to understand the interplay of their often manifold causes, biological, psychological, behavioral, cultural, and, yes, moral.
Then you’ll learn about exciting breakthroughs in pharmacological and other medical treatments, the benefits and limitations of psychotherapy, the critical place that spiritual direction must have in your healing, and the vital role that hope — Christian hope — can play in driving out depression.

Best book on depression I have read!
By Theresa M. George
As one who has suffered the effects of depression and anxiety for over 10 years, in addition to leading a deep prayer life, this book is truly a blessing. I have read several books on depression, some Christian and some specifically Catholic. This is by far the most excellent resource for depression I have been privileged to read.
Dr. Kheriaty not only addresses the topic of depression itself, but the spiritual life as well, for man is not just a mind and a physical body, but is imbued with an immortal soul. The healing of the soul cannot be separated from the healing of body/mind.
The author writes on topics including types and causes of depression, depression and the spiritual life with enlightening insights on differentiating depression from specific spiritual trials, suicide, treatments, and spiritual help with a focus on the virtue of hope.
There is no clear line of demarcation between the pysche and the spirit and Dr. Kheriaty makes that clear in abundance. He stresses the importance of treating the soul along with the mind which I found quite refreshing as well as his faithfulness to the Catholic tradition.
This is a book I would recommend to all spiritual directors and psychologists. I, for one, am most grateful to the author for helping me to continue my path to healing. Thank you.

Excellent. Book.
By Joseph Stiles
Just started reading this book and have found it very helpful. I recommend it to all to better understand depression and to realize there is great help for you if you struggle with depression and to know many very good strong faith filled people have also struggled with this. I worry that often people think they just are not strong or holy enough and if the can just buck up they can get better on their own. But this book takes that myth away and shows how very strong holy people have suffered with depression and it is not a sign of weakness but it is truly a disease of the brain and there are spiritual and medical ways to get help and live with this difficult disease. I suggest this book highly! Sharon

A definitive book that shows us how to use the rich resources we have for treatment and recovery.
By L. Jennings
This a superb book. It is not a book just for the Roman Catholic Community but a book that is rich in guidance as to overcoming depression. It is a well thought out and planned book.
This is NOT another self-help-how to cure the self on your own, presentation. It shows that
Psychological support is needed in addressing the problems of depression, but that we also have a valid reason for including our religious resources in overcoming this problem. Clearly, it is shown that religious help should be presented hand in hand for real recovery and understanding
that will resolve the problem.
