About the Author
Barry Davies joined the British Army in 1962 and four years later volunteered for the SAS. He remained with what is one of the world's most feared regiments for 18 years, during which time he was involved in skirmishes around the globe. He was instrumental in helping resolve the Mogadishu hijack situation in Germany, and was awarded the BEM. On leaving the SAS, Barry turned his talents to improving antiterrorist equipment, and he continues to advise, consult and lecture on all aspects of intelligence and terrorism. Barry has also written several books and is often seen on television. He lives in Spain.

Complete waste of paper

I like reading spy fiction--Ludlum, LeCarre, etc. I saw this and figured it would be interesting to read. It's a complete waste of time. I could have written it, for heaven's sake. Take, for example, the author's discussion of dead drops. He says that creativity is important. And that is all he says. No examples, no directions on what works and what doesn't. And he keeps mentioning marking things with chalk. Really? There is this thing called the internet and it has completely revolutionized spycraft. Absolutely no discussion of how to spies use internet.

Streetwise Spycraft

I was so excited to finally order this book. I've had it on my wish list for some time, but every time I went to order it, it was out of stock. When I finally received it, I was a little diasappojnted. This is a reprint of The Spycraft Manual (2005), with a few updates, fewer pictures, and a smaller print form. Much as I liked the material, I a little irked to find that I had bought a reprint of a book I already had. So, if you already own The Spycraft Manual, you don't need to buy this book.
All that being said, the information in the book is good. It is far from in depth, but is more of an overview of tradecraft. I do like the smaller size, Mr. Davies first book was an odd shape for the ol' library shelves.
If you are looking for a brief overview on intelligence tradecraft, this book is fine. If you want the basic nuts-and-bolts-how-can-I-be-a-spy information, try The Spy's Guide: Office Espionage by H.Keith Melton. Much more how-to in that book.

More "Basic" than "Streetwise"

The title of the book implies a quick and dirty low tech type of tradecraft. That's not what this book is about. It is a broad overview of various aspects of modern spying, but it doesn't really have any information that can't be found in other more comprehensive books. A better title would have been "Basic Spycraft" because it serves just fine as an introductory book.
